In my experience, dd is useful as a quick test to make sure there is nothing seriously broken on the client.  However, if the client is connected to a fast interconnect, dd may get bottlenecked by its single-threaded nature.  I often use xdd to run multithreaded tests on a single client.  xdd can also be used for multi-client tests, but I usually use IOR for that (if MPI is installed).
