You can include an "exclude" to the mount command. Something like:
mount -o exclude=<fsname>-OST00XX -t lustre <dev> <dir>
After mounting you can manually disable that OST as well. The 1.8 ops manual has
directions (section 4.3.13 on the one I have). Something like this on the Lustre clients
and the MDS.
lctl set_param osc.<fsname>-<OST name>-*.active=0
There's other options for handling iffy OST's in that section as well.

Our service has already been down a while.
Is there any special process for bringing up lustre and not having commands
hang on the lustre mount with one OST missing?
