We have run centos 5.8 / Lustre 2.1.5 clients against lustre 2.4 servers
without any problems. No guarantees, but that has worked for us.

I don't know how much testing (or haven't heard of much) that has been
done with lustre 2.5 servers and clients older than 2.4.
