I wonder whether or not you'll find it possible to downgrade your kernel
version so far. I expect that large of a change may break some system
components, such as the init system.
But more importantly...
Since Lustre servers patch the kernel, it will probably be very hard to
build them for anything other than exactly the supported kernels.
That's why there's no info about it: I don't think anyone does it. At
best, it will be difficult, and if you have problems, it will be hard to
get help, because what you're trying to do is unique and untested.
Is there some really compelling reason you don't want to use CentOS
servers? I think you'll be much happier doing that.
If you're really determined, the build process documented here is
current and explains how to build the server kernel and RPMs for CentOS
6 - You'll have to figure out how to adapt it to Ubuntu yourself:

PS: The latest, unreleased, development code has RHEL 7 server support.
You might be able to adapt that to get servers on a newer kernel, but
that code is not really ready for production use.

I looked up GitHub of the latest kernel version and it shows that the
lustre client's code has been incorporated into the kernel. I am
unable to find any information wrt to the servers.
So, should I downgrade my kernel to 2.6.X version, recomplie it with
the patch and use it for lustre server(s) installation?
