with Qlustar you only install one (or with HA two) head-nodes. All the
other nodes in the cluster (compute/storage/or whatever) boot
light-weight (< 300MB) images over the network that are composed of image
modules and run in RAM. Among the supported modules are Lustre server
and Lustre client. You just select the modules you want for your image
in a GUI and press the "create" button to generate the image. One of the nice
things is that all image modules are packaged up as deb packages
themselves. So updating an image is simply done with "apt-get update;
apt-get dist-upgrade" like with any other package.

No compilations necessary. In case you start with a small Lustre system with
just 2 nodes e.g. for a dedicated HPC cluster, it might make sense to setup
the cluster head-nodes in HA and have them also serve your MDT/OST
lustre targets (no need for dedicated nodes then). This doesn't work out
of the box (HA is just still to complicated for that), but we have a
detailed step-by-step guide how to set this up. The guide needs a little
polishing and will be available on the Qlustar website soon (contact me
in private if you're interested in the unpolished version).
In any case, it's simple to setup a Qlustar test installation including a small
virtual demo cluster ( < 60 min.) on a single machine.
