When you're talking about "exists", the account only needs to exist on
the clients and the MDS. The OSSes do not need to be aware of it.
So, assuming your clients know about this user account, for the MDS it
means that user authentication on the MDS (or whatever tool is set in
identity_upcall - See the Lustre manual) must recognize the accounts.

root typically can't have this issue since "uid 0" is everywhere, but
user accounts (assuming windows domain accounts) can.
