Hi Lustre experts
I was wondering the possibility to build lustre client of version 2.8.0
with CentOS 7.3 “3.10.0-514.2.2.el7.x86_64” from the SRPM of “
lustre-client-2.8.0-3.10.0_327.3.1.el7.x86_64.src.rpm
<https://downloads.hpdd.intel.com/public/lustre/lustre-2.8.0/el7.2.1511/cl...
”.
Somehow there are some modifications in the kernel source. Just like the
report on the mail archive (see below).

Could we build the rpm files of lustre client 2.8.0 with git source
successfully?
I try the SRPM of lustre 2.9.0 with CentOS 7.3.1611. It works.

The Lustre 2.8.0 release was only built with CentOS 7.2, and AFAIK there are a number of
patches needed to build against CentOS 7.3 which are included in the Lustre 2.9.0
release.

Normally I don't contradict, but he's asking about the client as far as I
understand.
The client can be built from source for any kernel* up to 4.2 (lustre 2.8)
and Lustre 2.9 I believe was patched to work with newer kernels but we
haven't tested yet.
* not quite any, you probably need at least kernel 2.6.X but that is still
almost any kernel released in the past few years.

Are you talking vanilla kernels or Red Hat kernel? Red Hat can sometimes include something
from a more current kernel than their baseline that needs to be adapted to and I think
that is what Andreas is suggesting happened with RHEL 7.3. Or have you tried it and found
otherwise ?

We build our own kernels from vanilla with some extra flavors, our clients
currently run kernel 4.2.8 (+patch for COW and other additions).
On our clients we aren't running RHEL but afaik it should be possible to
compile your own vanilla kernel for RHEL just like it is possible to
compile it for other distros and since that is possible there should be no
issue running a Lustre 2.8 client on RHEL 7.3 or on any other distro that
allows your own kernel.

Sure. Vanilla kernels should work in that range if that is acceptable.
