Performing "make rpms" on current Git pull fails with "error: line 144: Version required: Requires: kernel ="

Hi all,
I'm running through and documenting the build process of the latest Lustre
now from Git according to the procedure in the Lustre Administrator's
Manual and everything was going fine until I get to 30.3.2 Configuring and
Building Lustre RPMs.
I can kick off the configure and it completes, no problem:
cd ~/lustre-release

--with-linux=home/build/kernel/rpmbuild/BUILD/kernel-3.10.0_229.4.2.el7.centos_lustre.x86_64/
If I go and run a straight "make" that will complete without any errors,
however, if I try to then run a "make rpms", it fails quite quickly with

Does that make sense to anyone? I was pretty meticulous about following the
build procedure, I did have to do a few substitutions for things in CentOS
7 but everything appeared to complete clean. I only encountered some
trouble when actually trying to produce the RPMs ...
Did I make a silly error upstream that's only affecting me now? Is this
just something I need to adjust for in CentOS (how?) or should I just file
a bug report?
I can't figure out what's producing this "Version required: Requires:
kernel =" message. I can't find it grepping through all the various
Makefiles... anyone got any ideas?

This is coming from the specfile:
144 Requires: kernel = %{krequires}
so krequires is probably not set on your setup for some reason.

First question is do you want to build server rpms or client rpms?
Second question is do you have the “linux-source-tree”/include/generated/* files. The
kversion is based on that. If not you need to do a make oldconfig;make prepare in your
Kernel source tree. Especially in the case were you are not using linux kernel obj tree
from kernel-devel-*.rpm.

Sorry for the junk e-mail just previous; I'm no huge fan of Google Mail;
sometimes it just sends messages when you copy and paste certain things
into it. Sigh.
Anyway, ah, okay, I see it now, line 144 of the file
lustre-release/lustre.spec. Should I replace that manually with the text
string that I used as EXTRAVERSION in the Makefile when performing the
"Patching the Kernel Source with the Lustre Code" step? Or comment it out
entirely?
I'm trying to bring up servers, here; the clients will be Ubuntu machines
... hope to get that figured out later ... I'm brand new at this and we're
doing it ourselves on white box hardware, no systems integrator involved,
so just trying to understand how everything fits together.
My kernel patched and built successfully; I have the RPM for that, but I
haven't installed it yet; I assume there was some userland binary stuff
that needed to be built and installed in step 30.3.2 in the manual.
So, I do have some files in that path; I believe for me on CentOS 7 that
will be:
/home/build/kernel/rpmbuild/BUILD/kernel-3.10.0_229.4.2.el7.centos_lustre.x86_64/include/generated/
The files are:
asm-offsets.h autoconf.h bounds.h compile.h uapi utsrelease.h
I assume all this stuff was generated when I went through and built the
kernel. As I say, the actual "make" proper of section 30.3.2 completed
without error, it's just the "make rpms" that fails; it seems more a
packaging issue ... I'm mostly a Debian/Ubuntu guy so I might just be
missing something... I am not as familiar with the process for building
RPMs as for .debs but I assume a sort of "package information file" is
being automatically generated here and it's missing a line, basically ... I
understand this is line 144 in lustre.spec now; just not sure how to handle
this?
There is no "krequires" package that I can find ... unless it is in there
by another name? Still searching on that while I see if anything further
comes in here.

for a specific kernel version was mangled. Look for 'Requires: kernel
=' in the spec. This will be %{krequires}, which is defined as :

-e 's/\.i[3456]86$//' -e 's/-smp$//' -e 's/-bigsmp$//' -e

Which makes me guess that %{kversion} is undefined. kversion is defined
from the linux kernel headers. That it is all coming up empty makes me
think you've probably got the wrong path to the linux kernel objects
and/or sources.

I've hit this as well. Some relatively recent commit - 2.7.0 is fine - has broken
this process. I tried to figure out what and gave up, I am now bisecting. The specific
issue seems to be that %kversion is not being read out, but I'm not sure of the why.

Thanks, Patrick, nice to know I'm not just going crazy :O I'm not attached
necessarily to running the "bleeding edge" ... I think we want something
that is fairly modern ... no older than, say, 2.5 or so ... but I don't
need to pull -devel from Git ... are there tarballs available of fixed
releases, or can anyone here who's more familiar with Git, give me a quick
one-liner I could use to grab the entire hierarchy for something slightly
more stable?

git tag
Create and checkout a branch at a particular tag:
git checkout -b tag_2.7.0 v2_7_0

Thanks, guys, just talked to Brock on the phone and he clued me in a little
bit. I will retry with a slightly backed up version, 2.7.0 straight and see
how that goes.
Just wanted to confirm -- Brock wasn't sure -- both client and server are
intended to run on RHEL/CentOS 7? Looking at the release, it gives me the
feeling; and it patches and compiles clean which is a strong indicator;
just trying to not do anything totally nuts here.
I hate to take this particular thread too far off topic but can you guys
provide any guidance on what would make a good compromise between features
and stability in terms of the Lustre release? This is mostly experimental
for now but will eventually lead to kind of a "pilot" deployment ... I
don't want to roll out something that's essentially obsolete as soon as it
hits pilot and would require an immediate update, but I don't want
something too unstable for real work, either.

No, for server, it's CentOS 6 for everything earlier than current development branches
(which will become 2.8.0).
For client, it can be built for nearly any linux kernel from 2.6.32 vintage up to
somewhere around 3.16. (Someone else will know the exact latest.)
If you'd like stability, 2.5 is your best bet as it was the last maintenance release
(pull the 2.5 branch, I believe it saw patches committed after the last tagged release,
2.5.3). If you're going features, there's no reason to pick 2.6 instead of 2.7,
so just go with 2.7. As for a compromise... That's a hard thing to judge. My ideal
combination, personally, would be 2.7 clients and 2.5 servers, as the largest recent
improvements have been to clients.
We should really get some wiki pages written for these questions...

2.8.0 will formally support CentOS 7 as a server? Can you (or anyone else
on the list who may be listening) offer an estimate on when 2.8.0 will be
"frozen" just for the sake of my future planning?
I will consider your advice and take advantage of the experimental mandate
I've been given and hack around a little bit within ... I think the 2.7
train ... I can't go back to CentOS 6 with the 2.6.x kernel given hardware
considerations ... to try to get a feel for what will work best in our

few extra packages in there that aren't mentioned in my printing of the
Lustre 2.x operations manual ... but I never hit any errors previous in
the build process; the kernel builds fine ... just trying to build the
Lustre RPMs fails ... final step ... I feel like anything I would have
made a hash of so grievously would have caused fatal errors earlier in
the process, no?
