Looks like I had the 99.7 app with the 99.6 libraries (from an earlier compilation). After removing the stale libraries, both syncevolution --source-property backend="?" and syncevolution --export $HOME/calendar-backup.txt n900 calendar work correctly. Now, I only need to test the actual synchronization...
