This works well for data stores which have a native text format that can be imported/exported. For local data stores which don't have such a format it would be a lot easier to read/write Synthesis field list fields directly. This requires changing the internal APIs for SyncEvolution backends. As for ODBC backends (bug #5047), testing such a sync source with client-test requires some kind of text format that preserves all local items.
