I had a chance to discuss this with Ralf Becker at CalConnect. It is related to
eGroupware bugs:
https://community.egroupware.org/egroupware/index.php?menuaction=tracker....
Bug #3020 is about the regression,
bug #2975 about the reason why it was introduced.
It seems that the bug was introduced in a attempt to fix escaping issues when
using XML. But it broke WBXML because CDATA is now used unconditionally. The
real fix must be to detect whether WBXML or XML are used, instead of checking
which client is talking to the server.
As a client-side workaround, setting enableWBXML=0 should work.
