Indeed it does... but it only shows events in the immediate future (as
intended), so what if the event I added is far ahead (but I still need to be
aware of it, so that I don't inadvertently schedule something else at the same
time)?
If you're lucky, maybe the desktop widget will also access the
calendar backend in a way that also happens to refresh the calendar app (which
you say otherwise only happens on exit), but I haven't tested.
Unfortunately it doesn't. Even opening the calendar app via the widget doesn't
help (i.e. even though the widget shows a newly added event, the same doesn't
show up in the big calendar opened by the widget.
