This is apparently partly to allow setting a version number based on
a git
commit ID. So, for instance my configure.in has this:
AC_INIT([syncevolution], [1.1.99.4+20110630+SE+7777955+unclean])
That seems unwise anyway. Is that feature really used or useful?
It is used and very much useful :-) The nightly builds automatically check out
the latest source and produce snapshots that are properly versioned, both in
the resulting source .tar.gz file name and in the binaries.
I find that much more useful and reliable than overwriting the same .tar.gz
source archive every day with different content. These snapshots are getting
used elsewhere, for example MeeGo.
"Real" releases are tagged, in which case the automatically generated version
is created without the git hashes inside.
That this automatism doesn't work for detached heads is a bug that I'll fix.
