I managed to fix the authentication issue (thanks to Johan Hedberg on
#bluez@freenode) by forcing downgrade to bluetooth 2.0 pairing, using:
sudo hciconfig hci0 sspmode 0
and repairing laptop and n900.
Now I can browse files on n900, but syncevolution still fails:
