Hi Patrick,
I think an important foot note is the question which goals the projects
have. I am personally (as IT manager of a university) see three general
needs in terms of synchronization:
1. a groupware server (with Active Sync support)
2. a sync solution on mobile devices (for Linux mobiles)
3. a local desktop solution to backup devices
A fourth nice-to-have need is a synchronization of a device with a
groupware server via a local software. This would avoid the usage of
over-the-air transport which sometimes still costs money. I think this
is some kind of bridge mode.
As a SME proprietor (in my case it's a small UK Ltd. company) the above
don't do what we need. Our requirement is for straightforward
phone/PDA to desktop/laptop synchronisation. We're simply not big
enough to require any sort of 'groupware' solution though it would
fulfil our needs if it was lightweight enough to manage and run on our
own server system.
Having wanted something to replace our ageing Palm based PDAs I have yet
to find *anything* that does what we need as simply and effectively.
Syncevolution is the right idea but it's simply not stable enough (the
interface I suspect rather than the software) to be usable.
