The self-contained aspect is also very important to folk who don't have
access to high-speed, low-cost mobile data plans. Where I live (Auckland
NZ), speed is reasonable but the cost is still considerable. I had to
reject any option that was going to require syncing via an external
server. If someone is using a phone without wifi, that actually rules
out any form of http connection.
