Even if the server had returned something useful, I'm not sure
SyncEvolution really would have retried it - at least not automatically.
Let's go for an approach with an explicit "SyncMLVersion" configuration
option => currently discussed here:
http://bugzilla.moblin.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9312
I built binaries of the latest sources, which includes support for
SyncMLVersion. Gunter, can you check that this really solves the problem
for you?
