As far as I know, the Ubuntu source packages are unmodified snapshots of
the Debian packages. They are built in a different environment, which
sometime introduces problems not found in Debian (presumably the
opposite is possible as well).
My only suggestion is to try and duplicate the problems in a Debian
install, and file Debian bug reports if you can. I am very interested
in knowing about problems like files being installed into the wrong
place.
I'd be happy to have someone who looks after the Ubuntu packages
involved with the "upstream" Debian packages; in particular triaging
launchpad and figuring out which bugs are really Debian bugs would be
very helpful. Not too much packaging expertise is needed for this, just
a dual boot setup of Debian/Ubuntu, and perhaps some experience
rebuilding packages from source.
