Is the funambol android client compatible with syncevolution?

I have a lot of friends who (unfortunately? ;-) ) bought some recent android
phones and would like to sync with syncevolution. I wonder whether there is a
way for them to recover from their original sin.

If I remember correctly, someone who tested it ran into bugs in the
Android client which prevented syncing. These should be fixed by now,
but I think there were no further reports about it.
In any case, syncing directly would only work when running SyncEvolution
as HTTP SyncML server:

I don't know about the Funambol client, but I've been using "Synthesis
SyncML Client for Android" (www.synthesis.ch) with my Nexus One,
Syncevolution as server. It has worked without any problems, but it's
a little pricey for a basic app that should really be included. IMO.
