a CalDAV calendar. My laptop is still set to the local copy.

Accessing a CalDAV calendar via Evolution Data Server as you do on the
desktop is not tested in SyncEvolution. The other thread was about using
SyncEvolution's own CalDAV backend in the context of SyncML.
You can get around the error that you experienced by setting the
databaseUsername/Password properties for the "calendar" source. Whether
it works is a different question. As I said, untested, your mileage may
vary.
The reason for writing a CalDAV backend in SyncEvolution instead of
using/improving the CalDAV backend in Evolution were manifold. The main
motivation was to support full offline operations on the calendar data
(not supported by Evolution) and efficient syncing (the EDS API is more
limited than CalDAV).

Looks like it doesn't work - after configuring the username and
password, I still get access denied errors. I'll switch my primary
calendar away from CalDAV.

I've been running radicale caldav server on my desktop machine which I
sync via evolution, using syncevolution 1.1.1 on Ubuntu Lucid. This
setup allows me to use Lightning, which is my preferred calendar
software, on both desktop and laptop over the LAN.
This is currently running very nicely, but is it likely to break in
future versions of syncevolution?

I don't intend to break any existing functionality. Can you say more
about your setup so that I don't accidentally break it?

It is not obvious to me how you are using SyncEvolution. Is it as

SyncEvolution Evolution Calendar backend + Evolution Data Server
CalDAV backend?
I have a calendar set up under Evolution's CalDAV option, and it's
defined as the default calendar. SyncEvolution syncs it via bluetooth to
a Nokia E63.
The radicale server is then accessible by my laptop over the LAN, and by
Thunderbird/Lightning on the local machine.
I'd be quite happy to use something that syncs directly from the E63 to
the radicale server, except that Thunderbird/Lightning has no Memo/Notes
functionality, while Evolution does.
I hope this makes things a bit clearer.
