My wife currently has a Palm Treo which is getting a bit old and
decrepit (the phone, not the wife!) and we're looking for a replacement
which can offer similar connectivity with Evolution on her desktop (the
Palm works with Gnome-pilot etc. of course).
I've been having reasonable success synchronising my Nokia E71 with
Evolution using the latest syncevolution release and it looks anyway as
if syncevolution is the only game in town.
So what phones would the syncevolution team recommend for use with
syncevolution, i.e. what phones work well and are likely to get
continued support for a while at least?
My wife needs contacts and calendar basically.

Continued support from SyncEvolution or the vendor? The support model in
SyncEvolution is simple: we try to nor break anything that used to work.
Regular testing and adding new devices depends on feedback and help by
people owning specific phones.
At the moment, Nokia phones tend to work best. Franz recently provided
some insight into a problem with Sony Ericsson phones, so perhaps more
of those will also work soonish. Some already do.

Just wanted to note that only Nokia models with Symbian S60 and S40 work almost
surely.
At the moment, as you can read from other threads, some of the newest Nokia,
which run Symbian^3, do not work with Syncevolution.

I should have been more careful and correct in writing my message.
No one has ever said, in my knowledge, that Symbian^3 does not work with
Syncevolution.
Instead, in a thread I made a question and got the following response:
One more question: are you planning to make syncevolution work with
symbian^3 ?
"Work with" in the sense that SyncEvolution can exchange data with it?
That all depends on what kind of problems users run into. I will
certainly merge patches that fix problems, but whether I have time and
the means (= phones to test with) is a different question.
which is definitely a different sentence, even if it actually
discouraged me from buying an N8 until someone else tries it.

This is indeed a different question. If you want to stick with phones
that are known to work, then you'll have to stay with older devices and
hope that the person reporting success with his device tried the things
that you are interested in. For example, some people might have tried
only contacts whereas you want calendar to work. Or calendar works, but
not in your time zone...
